Rhys has a broad range of commercial law experience. He studied law, in Perth, at the University of Western Australia, and was awarded Honours and the University Prize in Corporate Insolvency Law. He completed his Honours Thesis in Corporate Law. While studying, he also worked for a top-tier commercial firm, in the environment and planning practice group. After graduation, he held the position of Associate to the President of the WA Court of Appeal.
Rhys completed his practical legal training in Sydney and was admitted as a lawyer of the NSW Supreme Court and the Federal and High Courts of Australia. He practised, in Sydney, as a lawyer for over seven years; as a solicitor at top-tier and national firms for three years; as a barrister and member of the NSW private Bar for three years; and, as a prosecutor with the NSW ODPP. During this time, he worked in several areas, including Commercial Law, Corporate Law, Financial Services, Commercial Disputes, Employment Law, and Criminal Law, in advisory and litigation matters.
Rhys grew up in Cairns. In his mid-teens, he moved from Far North Queensland to further pursue his sporting goals, which took him to Western Australia where he captained the State schoolboy soccer team and represented Australia. He also played with an Australian side in the Youth Club World Cup, in Viareggio Italy.
Recently, in 2018, after living in Perth for 10 years and then in Sydney for seven, Rhys moved home to Cairns. He has strong family ties in the area and is delighted to have joined a truly local firm, which has provided quality legal services to the region for over 30 years.
